'not easy' ? Microchip wrote code in XC8( yes, I have the PDF...) CCS wrote their Interrupt 'controller'.( 'all purpose' ).. so you can write your own.
I know in the past, others have 'trimmed down' ...

Sounds like a problem in how you designed/built the power supply section of the PCB. Is it rated for at least 3x max running current ? IE say the unit needs 3 amps when running, PSU should ...

Another option, is to code your own Interrupt System.

From what I understand, the CCS approach saves 'lots of stuff' because you might need it.

Providing you KNOW what YOU need to save and use, ...

local store here USB A connector is $3.99 and I have to drive there and back ( 1 hour total road trip.

Seriously though, a 'daughter' PCB with say, hmm, a 16F84 might be an option ???

Odds are the new PIC and PCB will be cheaper than a 16C55 !

for sure it'll program with a PICSTART+, I have 2 'somewhere'.... course you'll need a PC with a 9 pin COMPORT..... Surprised

booted up the 'beast'..... MPLAB 7v51 and PICSTART+ LIKE the 16C55 !

You might try PIC16F55 and see if it likes it ??

'C' would be quartz window version,so hope you had it covered !

yeesh.... sounds like a 'fun' PIC to deal with !

Kinda wondered why the 'warp speed' for the clock, especially for testing .

I KNOW board layout,wiring,etc. is critical to get more than 10 bits ...

THAT PIC appears to be 'dual core' . If so I assume YOU have to configure what pins are ADC and where they go --> PIC #1, --> PIC #2
